The images you would like to include should be posted as attachments below. “Welcome to Florida” is a sentence that we use at work whenever something weird, unbelievable of crazy happen such as the weather raining and next minute it’s sunny. However, this story is going to be specifically in Miami, Florida. Florida in general is famous for it’s random and crazy events, Miami is known as a luxury, beautiful, eventful place but this story will be telling and showing the bad side of Miami, the poor neighborhood and how dangerous it can be. I’m an 18-year-old guy who works at a corner store owned by a family friend in a poor neighborhood where anything is possible, and we are the opposite if professionals when it comes to customer service but at the same time, we provide an amazing customer service. A couple months ago I started seeing a new customer coming in, he seemed nice, but he also acted different, it was like he is not in a stable mindset. As always, I’m talking with my customers, cussing them out in a sarcastic way, joking around and talking about dogs and random topics. After my new customer walked out, all my customers and me started talking about him and how he seems like he is on something, somebody suggested Molly which wasn’t surprising, but it was too early for me to judge. After a couple weeks when we got comfortable, I asked him if he smokes, and in a poor neighborhood everybody is honest because nobody cared, surprisingly the suggestion was right and the guy said “yea man, sometimes I get on Molly and I got caught so now I’m obligated to take specific medicines." I didn’t say nothing about that and switched the topic as fast as I could. About a month later, I catch this guy stealing and I kick him out with no hesitation. From then on, we started calling him “The thief” around the store. He was never allowed back in, but the next week he tried to get in a couple times, and I kept kicking him out until one time the situation got intense. We started screaming, so my coworker, who’s nearly 60, comes in with a metal bar and screams at the guy to go out or he’ll hit him with it. The thief goes out and after we walk back in, he comes back and starts threatening us. Me, knowing that he’s crazy, I didn’t care much. My coworker didn’t care either. We have seen worse. A couple months later, he tried to get back in. We never allowed him, but it kept happening. Then he disappears, and we didn't see him for about two weeks. Until one day, August 10, 2022, I'm opening the store, like I normally open. I make my coffee, turn everything on, sit down at the register, and not ten minutes after I open a detective with four cops walk in. It was very unexpected. The detective tells me that there was a shooting in the apartment complex behind our store and they wanted the footage from the store view. I said “no problem, give me five minutes and I will pull it out for you.” As I’m watching the footage I see that “the thief” came by the store at 3:00 am, hit a security guard, took the security’s firearm, ran to the back apartments, and started shooting. After watching the video, I directly thought “if it was at another time, I could have been dead now” which I guess was lucky. I give the detective the footage and they leave. An hour later a bunch of news channel people walk in and start asking me for the footage, but I didn’t know if I was allowed to do that, or if it was a good idea so I refused with the excuse that only the owner can access that and he is not here at the moment. Luckily after they took the crazy guy, we all calmed down until a week ago, he was outside with no charges because “he has a blue file” which basically means he is not in his right mind and cannot be charged as a normal person. He tried to get in and I couldn’t let him so this time this is how it went: Me: “Hey man, listen, you know I can’t let you in. If you want anything, just stand outside and let me know what you want. I’ll get it for you just stay outside.” Him: “Alright man I just want a black & mild and a Powerade.” Me: “Alright, walk outside and I’ll get it for you.” Thankfully he did walk outside. I got his stuff and no more arguments happened. It still feels uncomfortable knowing he’s always standing outside but now we are on a safe side and we both get our things done this way. Everything still feels crazy how someone who’s willing to take a life can have a free life just because he is not in a stable mindset! Not psychiatric prison or anything! The neighborhood still has no cops around it and the store has no security. I guess this is the side of Miami the news doesn’t talk about, the side where nobody cares and there’s always a chance of something to go wrong. Even in a luxurious city like Miami, there are these neighborhoods where no one cares, or even doubt, where people can be happy with the least yet always expect the worse, Where a child can die because a parent doesn’t make enough money to live in a good area.
