<text>That was the scariest day of my life. Winter, the love of my life, is gone. But how did this happen? How did I let this happen? How could I have been so careless?

Riiiiiiing!! Ringggggggg! Riiiiingggg! “Chris will you please stop your alarm” Winter yells while half asleep.
“Sorry, sorry you know I always wake up way ahead,” says Chris.

After getting ready for work Chris makes coffee for Winter and leaves a note for her reading. “Good luck at work today babe, I have a short day today so I should be home around the same time as you!” Before running out the door.
He had forgotten to kiss her goodbye but he left a note so he didn’t worry too much about it.

Outside Chris gets in his motorboat and starts it by pulling the motor line. But the motor just won’t start. Chris knows the usual boat ride only takes 15 minutes but without a motor, he would have to paddle his boat to the restaurant.
While annoying, Chris has been paddling since he was born. After all, he was born in 2085, 15 years after the ocean levels rose over 8 feet.
Chris sits down and rows north for 15 minutes until his arms give up before taking a short break and recalling his days back in Thailand, his homeland, while he has only been able to visit a few times because of the severe flooding and lack of governmental help to rebuild the most affected areas. He still feels at home when he rows through the floating cities that have been put together. Since the ocean rose this is what he has always known.
His thoughts get shocked back to the present when he realizes Winter hasn’t texted him while having the coffee he usually makes her. While a little worried he figured she was late for work again and pushes it aside after a short text. Reading “Babe? Did you go to work yet it’s late”, and got back to rowing.
South Miami was very different from what he had heard from his Thai family, the loud roaring city he had heard of was replaced by a strange yet beautiful scenario. Full of newly built houseboats and the leftovers of the eroded buildings that fell from the erosion by the sea salt. Sounds strange but it was one of the most beautiful scenarios he had ever seen. The government deemed removing the tons of parts left from the building was too expensive, but in a way, the moss growing on the old walls created a unique place that can’t be seen anywhere else.

After some time Chris arrived at Sushi Zo a high-end sushi restaurant that expanded to South Florida from California after the ocean rose.
Chris was the assistant to the head chef which meant he and Mark the head chef would drive out and catch fresh fish for the day.
Soon after arriving they both left southbound and started looking for the fish needed for the day. While out Mark and Chris usually talk about different things such as their personal beliefs and relationships. They had a very special relationship after working together for so long and they were incredibly close. They have a long conversation about their thoughts on the current situation with the police department, which is now the navy due to the rising sea levels. They both have a big dislike of the government and try to avoid them as much as possible. After some time Mark asks about Winter and how she’s been since she last stopped by the restaurant. At this point, Chris checks his phone expecting a reply to his text from almost 2 hours ago now. But there’s nothing, no reply and no activity which scares Chris but he tries to hold himself back since she tends to forget to text when she gets busy at work. “She’s probably busy at work,” says Chris and brushes it off one more time. Before heading back to Sushi Zo and starting preparation for the day. When the restaurant finally opens he sends Winter a new message asking how work is going and starts his shift. Sushi Zo was known for serving the freshest and highest quality sushi in all of the US which meant that shifts were long and tedious. Chris, Mark, and their team worked nonstop for hours. After 5 hours Chris had a 30-minute break which he usually took to ask Winter how she was doing at work so he opened their messages and found she finally replied to him and said “Sorry my boss is already giving me a hard time” accompanied by a rolling eyes emoji at 4:57 pm. She hated her boss.
He hoped that they hadn’t gotten into an altercation. Just as fast as his break started it was over and he had to go back. Luckily he ended his shift earlier than usual so he’d be home not too long after Winter gets home. Chris joins back into the kitchen and this shift kicks his ass, he and the team have a big party to cater for the next few hours. But together they pull through and it’s Chris’s time to go home.
At this time he gets back on his boat and checks his phone for a text from Winter but he sees nothing so he starts rowing home, the long 30-minute ride makes his mind wander, and worry about the fact Winter hasn’t said anything in nearly 6 hours especially since she would usually be home by now. Finally, he makes it home and realizes Winter’s boat is missing from the house which he finds strange considering the time. Mina didn’t normally text him when she arrived home, but he at least expected her to let him know that she would be late today.

At this point his mind races. He opens their messages and found the last text from her had been nearly 6, so Chris texted her in a slightly agitated manner: “Honey, will you be home soon?”. 2 minutes later, no response. Then 5 minutes. Then 10. All Chris could do was pace the living room hoping that if he stared hard enough at his phone, a text from Winter would pop up.
But it didn’t, and now Chris was starting to get anxious. He debated passing time by clearing through his favorite video game for the ninth time. But this was about Winter, not even another speed run could calm his nerves, his heart beating faster than his avatar could ever run.
Perhaps Chris should text Winter’s older brother, maybe even her mom. Surely they would know if she was fine; maybe she even paid a visit to them on the way back home.
No, that wouldn’t make sense. Her mom’s house is too out of the way, and so is her brother. The most they would know about Winter’s whereabouts is from a text from her, which seemed unreliable.
Chris decided to text them anyway, but all he got in a reply were denials about knowing her whereabouts, but that she probably needed to stay later for some undisclosed reason. Winter's brother added that Chris was overthinking, much to Chris’s dismay.
He wasn’t completely calmed down, but the reassuring texts from Winter’s family gave him some peace of mind. Well, for a good five minutes, he was right back to panic. He loves Winter with all his heart, but he strongly dislikes (Chris hates the word “hate”) how tight-lipped she could be about work. She could talk his ear off about the murder-suicide she saw on last week’s special, and rant for hours about how much her boss makes her want to cut him into a million little pieces, but once she’s at work, it’s as if she’s too preoccupied to give Chris a second thought.
Chris had already texted Winter a good 7 more times. No response. He tried to check her location, but it wouldn’t refresh, her last location being almost 5 hours ago, at work. Hyperventilating at this point, he willed her to come home by wailing “Winter, please come home already” to no one in the quiet apartment. Yet the front door remained as tightly shut as his fiancé's lips.
He had no choice. He had to call 911, the ones he disliked so much. But this was an emergency. Picking up his phone to dial the emergency line, he began to regret not giving Winter a more passionate goodbye this morning when he left for work, a loving kiss as he exited the apartment. He should have shot a more heartfelt “I love you”, like a cupid launching an arrow straight to her heart. Chris frantically typed the numbers 9-1–
The front door lock ever so slightly creaked. Like a swift cat, Chris jerked his head toward the door to find it opening and revealing his disheveled fiancé.
Chris almost passed out from the relief that overcame him.
“Winter!!!” Chris sobbed out her name as he beelined toward her and tackled her into the tightest hug. Still not as tight as her lips, though. “Winter! I was so worried, I thought you died! I mean, it’s so late, and you weren’t answering and—“ the words pouring out at him at an alarming rate.
“I’m sorry, love,” Winter interrupted, “My boss wanted me to stay later, and my phone died.” But before Chris could respond, she pushed past him toward the bathroom. “I’m sorry, I have to use the restroom.”
Chris just stared as she locked herself in the bathroom, but he was just relieved to have her back. Too distracted by happiness to notice the bloodstains she left on the floor in front of the door, and the bloodied knife she hid under her jacket. Too distracted to put together that she was rinsing off the evidence before greeting him properly.
She will have a good day at work tomorrow.
