Dear Journal, 12/7/2085
My fingers trembled with the urgency of my thoughts. As I desperately clutched onto the Hoverpen, the vivid flashing memories of Hurricane Canon continued to haunt me. Oh, how I despise this act of writing, yet today, the inner turmoil raging within me demands to be unleashed onto this virtual canvas. It was the only way to conceal the weight of my crushing emotions. I had to release them before they consumed me entirely. This was one of the many memories I had of my mothers twisted teachings that still send shivers down my spine; yet, I cannot help but feel a sickening sense of comfort from the habit and method she uploaded within me. Simultaneously, I wondered if anyone would get to read these journals or if it was a piece of writing that would be kept to myself to store my emotions forever; in the physical world which most of us had forgotten about.
I can still feel the powerful winds, the crushing pressure, the screams, and the fear that gripped me as the largest hurricane ever recorded slammed into what was, at the time, the peninsula of Florida, with such devastating force. The storm formed in West Africa, slowly ramping up its power, but nobody had predicted the sheer ferocity it would soon hit us with. Unlike every little storm or minor shower, not even the best meteorologists, technologies, and forms of mass media announced the cyclone of destruction that was coming… and it caught us all off guard. Nevertheless, after its torment, it left us all without any form of utilizing our electronics for a long time, no phones, no iPads, no power, no communication, no entertainment. Even the fiber optic underground cables constructed by the strongest of providers were damaged and left malfunctioning. During this storm my best friend Z and I (twelve years old at the time) were left at the top of our three floor apartment complex building. All those under sixteen years old and their mothers were left in this bunker, while the mostly male adults scrambled to barricade entries and obtain supplies such as generators, water, and food. As they saw the cyclone of clouds approaching, almost all these adults didn’t make it to the next day. Many ended up drowning, being taken away by the winds, electrocuted or smashed to death by falling objects while trying to protect and supply for the young ones.
The hurricane was a force of nature unlike any other. It unleashed winds of 230 mph and a barometric pressure of 800 mbar, tearing apart buildings, homes, and lives. A few months before the storm, the sea level rise was already above 6 feet here in South Florida and everything had already started slowing down… transitioning to a new way of life. But this event would only accelerate everything and intensify the rise of that “new way of life”. I guess looking back at it now it was inevitable anyway. With one glance at the antique Windows 21 machine my father once used when I was a little boy, I realized how quickly these pathetic humans would meet the consequences of their miscalculations on the accelerations of the sea level rise and the unpredicted advancement of global warming. I came to the conclusion that humans were truly pitiable creatures. Looking at ancient websites of sea level rise and whatever those stupid United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were still running outdated PHP code in their servers. I mean the issues were obvious, the world's powerhouse, the United States didn’t even share their data with the UN and there was no way to enforce these goals. On top of this, how could these really “smart” individuals back then not even realize how to calculate the acceleration of sea level rise accurately? I could’ve probably obtained a more accurate approximation with my basic physics and hydrology classes. And that’s by taking classes on Virtual305 while still in highschool… To make matters worse, humans are labeled the “smartest mammals”... embarrassing and questionable. Now, along with the sea level rise was the intensification and increased frequency of natural disasters and extreme weather patterns which was also unaccounted for. Not surprised.
If only they would have opened their eyes a little more. I don’t know much about meteorology but it can’t be that hard to see a 50 mile diameter hurricane eye coming straight towards us, but then again, their eyes must've been glued shut. The sky that day turned dark, as if an eclipse had just occurred, that was one of the last times I have seen the light blue sky ever being that clear. The air was thick and with sounds of howling winds, smashing debris, and the terrified screams of people caught in its path.
Dear Journal, 12/25/2085
The memory of Christmas sends a twisted thrill through my veins, a reminder of the fleeting joy that once graced my life lingers in my thoughts. How I yearn to feel that same surge of excitement again, to bask in the warmth of human connection. I again caught myself picking up the HoverPen to reflect my sadistic moments.
I was only thirteen years old when the storm took the only living parent away from me, my father Owen, which I was named after. I am usually able to keep myself very collected but at unexpected times reality strikes and I can’t cope. Mostly on days like today, I realize what it means to be lonely and not have any of your family with you anymore. I can still see the chaos, the flooding, and destruction that left south Florida to cope with unimaginable sea level rise. Tourism had already slowed before the storm, but after Hurricane Canon, Florida became fully “uninhabitable”. People were trying to move out, and funding was cut, leaving us with little hope for the future. All the economic prosperity of Florida was drained down the sewers, unlike the massive water that was actually meant to do that. Almost everyone in our old apartment complex was ravaged by storming waters and catastrophic winds. Somehow, I survived. My best friend, Zephyr Nova, or Z as we called him, lost his father to the storm too.We were both devastated, but I was lucky enough to be taken in by Z’s mother. She became my foster mother and I was grateful to have a place to call home. The trauma of Hurricane Canon still lingers with me. The vivid memories are hard to recall because of my repressed memory and dissociation with the event, but I can remember the feeling of being lost in a world turned upside down.
After the storm, Miami-Dade County was left with a population of only 500k, and almost everything submerged underwater, it was left isolated and to rot. We constantly dealt with storms, fluctuating temperatures, tides, and scarce resources to do anything. It was like we were living in a different world, one that was harsh and unforgiving.
The only hope we had left was OpenAI’s donations. OpenAI has become the world’s most powerful company, dominating the tech ecosystem worldwide. Their CEO, Sam Robo Baltman, donated customizable floating containers for everyone in Miami-Dade to live in. Once they arrived with their OpenAI troops, the containers were placed far from each other, we opened the large doors and almost no one was visible, just open seas. The only exception was the glimpse of what were small blurs of different bright containers in the distance. Each container had adjustable heavy-duty anchors tied to the bottom of the sea floor which kept them in place during long storms and waves. They shifted vertically to support the increase and decrease of water during massive king tides but were stuck to not be able to move horizontally or drift off. We each had our own small space in the container and were able to make small windows, change the colors of the metallic walls, and even customize the shape of our toilets. Our container, specifically, was 30 x 10 x 8 feet, this was the standard container size for a three person family. This would become our only living space and there was no escape from this compact box, but luckily soon there would come Virtual305. With our new shipping container-like home came a non-fungible token in a badge from CEO Baltman displaying a digital hologram saying the following message.
“Greetings, I hope you are all enjoying your new customizable resilient containers which will serve as your new sustainable homes as of now. As the physical world crumbles and the old order gives way to chaos, we find ourselves faced with a choice: to cling to the remnants of a broken reality or to embrace a new vision of existence. Inside Virtual305, we have found a refuge from the storms that ravage our physical world, a place where the laws of nature no longer hold sway and we are free to create our own destinies. But let us not mistake this freedom for license. As we chart a new course in this uncharted territory, let us always remember that the true measure of our success will not be in the scale of our achievements, but in the depth of our humanity. We are devastated by this Floridian loss and trust that Virtual305 will serve as a Beacon of Hope. Cheers and best of luck to all those impacted and receiving these homes, OpenAI is always here to provide for the public's safety and needs. Sincerely, OpenAI CEO, Sam Robo Baltman"
While many were reluctant to accept his help, most had no other choice, so everyone was grateful that he was able to provide some sort of home for us. Z and I were enthusiastic to soon receive our care packages to access this Virtual305.
Dear Journal, 1/30/2086
Today marks the anniversary of my mothers death. I miss her gentle caresses, her loving words, and her embrace. I lost her just at the age of about eight due to her battle with constant seizures and severe eco-anxiety that led her to falling heavily ill and passing away. However, on the same day came our care package from OpenAI, inside was an Oculus Quest for each individual of the container. Baltman had taken advantage of the tech ecosystem that was left behind in Miami and somehow got the hardware and electrical systems back up with his powerful team. They soon installed a whole building in Miami, the only one over the water at this point. He soon released the launch of Virtual305 so everyone could go back to reality with their virtual avatars. The Virtual305 map was made to hold every single individual in Florida online at the same time. It was a “metaverse” and that was the best solution as of now. Everyone started getting accustomed to performing their daily tasks and were able to avoid the reality of the harsh outside environment. Education, jobs, hobbies, all interactions were continued in this world which was an exact replica of South Florida before sea-level rise and the infamous Hurricane Canon.
Eventually CEO Baltman became Senator of Florida, and his intentions were noble as he invested in renewable energy alongside technologies to help improve weather conditions, build advanced containers, and even got the first property under construction above the water where he held his office right near our container. Nevertheless, he single-handedly created this ecosystem to allow everyone to continue their lives and reduce the strain on Earth's systems and even started the construction of large sustainable container yards where many would be able to see each other and create a container community.
If there was anything my mother could be most proud of it would be my efficiency as an avid programmer. Just like my father I had become a very tech-savvy geek. I learned all about OpenAI and their infrastructure and now that Baltman released OpenAI’s Virtual305, their highschools had a system in which the top three graduating students had a chance at working for OpenAI in that brand new luxurious building they had just opened which could be seen by the little window of my containers space. Z was also a programming and cybersecurity freak. Together we created our own worlds inside Virtual305’s environment, found bugs and cool hacks inside the system which made us gain popularity quickly, we’d spend our time reading about Baltman and the rise of OpenAI and became huge fanatics. Although we lived inside the same container with his mother, we all hardly saw each other in person after we received our Oculus Quest, we were barely even audible to each other due to the sound proof walls of the container. Inside our container we made three divisions, so we could each have our 10x10x8 feet rooms. Inside each of our rooms, 50% of the area was taken by what was called the “305 Playground Workspace”. Every container was supposed to have one of these workspaces for each individual living in the floating home, users were also required to be hooked onto Virtual305 for a minimum of eight hours. In this space we would connect our Oculus Quest headset over our heads, put on the full body haptic suit and connective gloves, and then step on the 360 degree treadmill. In this world we felt everything our avatar did and controlled all characteristics of it, even the romantic ones. For food, we had weekly OpenAI shipments that would be dropped by drones inside of our container. We had a large variety of meal plan options, but never understood where these ingredients were sourced or what the meals actually contained since FDA wasn’t a department anymore. Furthermore, inside this metaverse Z and I were both very high standing academic students, although Z had an insane IQ I had more of the work-ethic to catch up to him, in essence we made a great team and that's what made us bestfriends. We set the goal that by the end of this school year we would be in the top 1% of our class to start working for OpenAI straight out of highschool.
Dear Journal, 07/02/2086
Today is the fifth year anniversary of the monstrous hurricane Canon that ravaged our lives. But to continue the sadistic streak of my journals we discovered something that shook our hearts, our hero, Baltman, might be a fraud for what Z and I know. A query that led us to a virtual room we had never seen before inside of Virtual305. We could feel the unease growing within us as we ventured deeper and deeper into the unknown dimensions of the metaverse and its source code.
Malevolent entities lurking in the shadows, avatars that we had never encountered, waiting to ensnare unsuspecting users in their grasp. We learned about OpenAI’s monopolistic plan to turn every human into an unconscious animal, to indoctrinate and addict them to this new world he created. Nevertheless, it was Baltman who had hacked all the meteorologists systems and paid off mass media with OpenAI fortune to cause this destruction in the first place. If anyone is to blame for the death of thousands it's him. And for the death of my own Father and Z’s father during the storm. It was clear now that Baltman's thirst for power and control had no limits, as he used his influence to prevent South Florida from preparing for the devastating hurricane, which was his first step in his twisted plan. Even so, all the open privacy, data, and nourishment bills he had been legislating for Florida to pass all made sense. Especially, the desensitizing law of the minimum requirement of eight hours a day on Virtual305.
Although Z and I were technology enthusiasts, we never became addicts and were very logical about the amount of time spent on Virtual305. Even before the arrival of this metaverse, we saw many around us become cyborgs in a way. The close relationship with technology is dangerous and Baltman was trying to exploit this weakness on humans. We had to seek vengeance and justice. Our next step was to infiltrate the source code of Virtual305 through this hidden backdoor and collect evidence meanwhile. Through this unprotected code we were able to locate Baltman's physical location in Miami and even create access cards to his new building. Since our container was one of the closest to the OpenAI building, we snuck our way into the facility, feeling the adrenaline pumping through our veins as we made our way closer to our goal.We injected code scripts using a flash drive into one of the physical systems to try to get Baltman and his team trapped in a metaverse loop forever. This meant that when they’d go back to their 305 Playground workplace and put on their headsets, however when trying to exit they would be trapped with them on, left in this dark room somewhat incarcerated and wouldn't be able to log out to reconnect with the physical world. Although the plan was wicked, it was the plan that he deserved. We then quietly snuck our way out. The next morning we joined Virtual305 and came back to that dark mysterious room and found the elite team trapped. Baltman’s sinister figure approached Z and I and we quickly disabled our haptic suits sensory just in case he tried to murder our avatars which would also end our real humans lives, even though there were no weapons available inside Virtual305 we took precaution. With a sly smile, he attempted to lure us into his twisted plans by flooding us with compliments and our impressive accomplishments, offering us an executive position at the head of OpenAI’s lead tech team. That was all Z and I had ever dreamed of and the tempting proposition clouded our judgment. However, our commitment to humanity and the burning fire of working for the monster that caused the death of fathers couldn’t be forgotten. With a steely gaze, we stood our ground and refused to be swayed. Without hesitation, we shut down all the servers of the metaverse and left them trapped in an infinite loop, we were successful.
But once I took off my own Oculus Quest glasses and started writing this letter, I realized I was back in my old apartment. The digital canvas and HoverPen were still in my hand; however, there was no sea level rise… In fact there was no sign of Hurricane Canon ever-lasting destruction. The world was back to normal, but where is everyone else? Better question… where am I?
