“This is Seven News first at Eight... Good morning, Miami. Today is April 13th, 2050,"
Greg Stevens, news anchor, said. "Seven News at Eight begins with an update on the rising sea levels surpassing five feet. As you know, Miami is one of the South Florida cities most at risk from the effects of climate change. Our city has already seen significant flooding, and experts predict that it will only get worse."
Bella sighed, feeling a sense of dread wash over her. She knew all too well the dangers of living in the Flood Zone. Her small apartment was situated on the outskirts of the area, and she had heard countless stories of people who had been robbed or attacked after dark, even the disturbing ones.
Despite the dangers, Bella had never been able to afford to move to a safer part of the city. After the sea level rose years ago, Miami’s housing prices skyrocketed, leaving many homeless. She had lived in building 114 for as long as she could remember, and she couldn't imagine leaving it behind.
As she looked out the window, feeling the breeze on her face, she watched as the sun began to set over the water. The orange and pink hues reflected off the surface, casting a warm glow over the surrounding buildings. It was a beautiful sight, but it was also a reminder of the risks that came with living in the Flood Zone.

The area was shrouded in mystery, with rumors of strange occurrences and unexplained events. There was a rumor that when people lost their houses to the flood and had nothing left, they let the floods take them as well. Some would even claim that the rising sea levels were a sign of impending doom, that the world was coming to an end.
Bella didn't believe in such things, but she couldn't deny the sense of unease that came with living in a place where the water seemed to be slowly creeping closer and closer. She knew that if she wanted to stay safe, she had to be cautious and smart to avoid becoming engulfed by the unforgiving water.
Bella went looking out the window and saw this man walking down the street every morning for as long as she could remember. He always wore the same plain white lab coat with a hanging card tag, which seemed out of place among the crowd of homeless people and people rushing to work or school. Bella couldn't help but wonder where he was going every day, or why he always wore that lab coat.
As she watched him pass by her window, she let out a small chuckle while drinking her morning coffee. "There goes the lab coat guy again," she says to her cat Potato. "Why do you think he wears that lab coat every day? Is he really that proud of being a scientist? Maybe I should get you a lab coat,” she told Potato. She found it amusing how he seemed to take himself so seriously, but she couldn't deny that she was intrigued by him.
Bella had never spoken to him before, but she had made up stories about him in her head. Maybe he was a scientist working on a top-secret project or a mad scientist experimenting on unwanted subjects. She shook her head, laughing at her own imagination.
“What do you think, Potato? Do you think he does evil experiments in his underground lab?” “Meow... Meow...”

“Yeah, I agree. He doesn’t seem that smart,” Bella said.
The man looked up and caught Bella's eye. He smiled and waved, and Bella felt her heart skip a beat. She had always been curious about him, but something about this morning and the way he waved drew her to him.
Bella couldn't help but feel intrigued by this mysterious man in the lab coat. She had seen him every morning for weeks now, and yet she had never spoken to him or even learned his name. But today was different.
As she watched him disappear down the street, Bella couldn't resist the urge to know more. She quickly grabbed her coat and headed out the door, determined to catch up with him. She wasn’t sure what she would say. It was like her mind had taken over her body.
As she walked, Bella couldn't help but imagine all sorts of scenarios in her head. Maybe he was a scientist working on a groundbreaking new invention. Or maybe he was a secret agent working for the government.
She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. It was silly to think like that. He was probably just a regular guy with a job at the nearby lab. As she turned the corner, he was gone. All she could see was the coffee shop filled with people, but he was nowhere to be seen.
“Am I going crazy?” she said. Bella shaking her head, decided to walk back to the apartment to get ready to work her shift.
At the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Bella worked as a nurse, assisting patients and doctors with their needs. She had formed a close relationship with her best friend/coworker, Sarah, who worked as a receptionist. Sarah was always up for a chisme and often listened to Bella's stories about the mystery man in the lab coat.

As they walked through the hospital hallways, Bella mentioned the man she had seen the day before. "I saw him again this morning, but this time he looked up at me and waved," she said to Sarah.
"Ooh, sounds like fate is trying to bring you two together," Sarah teased. “Sarah come on, what if he thinks I'm crazy? What if he noticed I watch him out my window every morning? OH MY GOD, what if he thinks I'm a stalker.” Bella exclaimed. “Bella, relax. It's not that serious, girl; he saw you a waved. Nothing wrong with that.” As they reached the nurse's station, Bella's pager went off, indicating that she was needed in a patient's room.
The day went by quickly, with Bella tending to various patients and assisting the doctors with their rounds. As her shift came to an end and the hospital became quiet, she decided to take a chance and visit the coffee shop where she had seen him walking.
When she arrived, she saw him sitting at a table in the corner, engrossed in his book. She took a deep breath and approached him.
"Hi, I'm Bella. I think you’re the guy that waved at me this morning," she said, extending her hand. The man looked up and smiled. "Oh, that was you? Well, hello, I'm Marcus," he replied, shaking her hand.
Bella found herself intrigued by Marcus and wanted to know more about him. As they talked, she found out that he was a research scientist at The University of Miami, and he was working on a project that could possibly help prevent the sea water rise crisis. Bella was impressed and honestly happy that he wasn’t a mad scientist in the end.
As they parted ways, Bella couldn't stop thinking about Marcus and their conversation. She felt a connection with him, and she knew that she wanted to see him again. She wondered if he felt the same way, or if their meeting was just a chance encounter.

Over time, Bella couldn't stop thinking about Marcus. She found herself looking forward to her morning lookouts, hoping that she would see him again. She even found herself checking out the coffee shops and bookstores in the area, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. But she didn't see him, and she began to worry that their meeting was just a one-time thing.
Finally, after a few days after their meeting, Bella saw Marcus again. He was standing outside the same coffee shop, and when he saw her, he smiled and waved. Bella felt her heart skip a beat, and she knew that she wanted to see him again.
Bella and Marcus found themselves drawn to the parts of Miami that were still above water, enjoying the feeling of being able to explore the city without worrying about flooding. They visited cafes, and bookstores, soaking up the culture and enjoying each other's company as if it was a dream.
One day, they stumbled upon a small park that overlooked the water. They sat on a bench and watched the water rumble quietly, the sun setting behind them. Marcus put his arm around Bella, and she leaned into him, feeling a sense of comfort and safety that she hadn't felt in a long time.
"I never thought I'd find someone who loves this city as much as I do," Marcus said, his eyes sparkling in the fading light.
"I know what you mean," Bella replied, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "It's like we're seeing it in a whole new light, isn't it?"
Marcus nodded. "It's like the city is revealing itself to us, one layer at a time."
They sat in silence for a few moments, enjoying the peacefulness of the park. Bella felt pressure on her chest, wondering if Marcus felt the same way she did. She looked up at him and caught his gaze.

"I know we've only known each other for a short time, but...I really like you, Marcus," she said, feeling her cheeks turn red.
Marcus smiled and squeezed her hand. "I really like you too, Bella.”
Bella felt a rush of excitement and anticipation. She didn't know where this relationship would go, but she was eager to find out.
“Hey, let's get out of here I wanna take you somewhere,” Marcus said.
They continued their adventure and explored the streets of Coral Gables, Bella and Marcus couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over them. They pointed out familiar places like Ben and Jerries ice cream shop they used to visit as kids, and Phillips Park, where they both played soccer on the weekends.
Marcus laughed as he recounted a time when he got in trouble for climbing up a tree to retrieve a soccer ball that had gotten stuck. "I thought I was going to be stuck there forever and die," he said, shaking his head in amusement.
Bella chimed in with her own story about the time she and her friends snuck into the Merrick Park movie theater and got caught. "My mom was so mad when she found out. Now I thought I was gonna die," she said, giggling at the memory.
As they continued their walk, they realized that they had actually crossed paths multiple times during their childhood without ever really knowing it. They had gone to the same elementary school, Coral Gables Preparatory Elementary School, and even played on the same club soccer team, but somehow, they had never really noticed each other.
"Isn't it crazy how life works sometimes?" Marcus said, looking at Bella with a newfound appreciation for their shared history.

Bella smiled back at him, feeling a warm sense of connection between them. "It really is," she said, taking his hand in hers. "But I'm glad we finally found each other."
As the sun began to set, they found themselves standing on the edge of a canal, watching the water flow by.
"It's strange to think that all of this could be underwater someday," Marcus said.
Bella nodded. "It's scary, too. I don't know how we'll ever be able to stop it; it's like it has a mind of its own."
Marcus put his arm around her lower back, pulling her closer. "That's what I'm working on," he said. "I'm trying to find a way to slow down the rising sea levels or maybe even reverse them.”
Marcus went on to explain his project in more detail. He had been working on a way to use nanotechnology to create a new material that could absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The idea was that if enough of this material could be deployed around the world, it could help slow down the rate of global warming and ultimately prevent further sea level rise.
Bella was impressed by Marcus's dedication. She could see the passion in his eyes as he spoke about his work, and it was clear that he truly believed in what he was doing. She found herself falling even more deeply in love with him, and she couldn't wait to see what the future held for them.
As they watched the sun dip below the horizon, Bella leaned into Marcus's embrace. She felt safe and loved, and for the first time in a long time, she was excited about what the future held.
Bella felt pressure on her chest. She had never felt this way about anyone before.

They would often spend time in Marcus's lab, pouring over data and brainstorming solutions. Bella loved the way Marcus's eyes would light up when he talked about his work, and she was fascinated by the complexity of the project. She found herself getting lost in the details, and Marcus would patiently explain everything to her, never once making her feel dumb for not understanding.
Sometimes, they would go out to eat at their favorite restaurants or take long walks along the water, holding hands and watching the water breathing. Bella felt like she had finally found her soulmate, someone who shared her passion for life and who challenged her to be her best self.
As they spent more and more time together, Bella began to imagine a future with Marcus, one where they would work together to save the world and raise a family with Little Potato. She felt like everything was finally falling into place, and she was grateful for every moment they spent together.
But little did they know that Hurricane Genesis was predicted to be one of the most brutal storms in Miami's history. The South Florida news channels were filled with warnings and updates, urging residents to evacuate or seek shelter. Bella couldn't believe the intensity of the storm, and she felt a pang of worry for Marcus and his project.
As she arrived at the hospital, she saw chaos and panic everywhere. Patients were being rushed in, and the hospital was understaffed and overwhelmed. Bella did her best to keep up with the demands, but it was clear that the situation was out of control.
She heard from her coworkers that the storm had caused widespread damage to the city, with many neighborhoods completely underwater. Bella couldn't help but wonder if Marcus was okay.

She turned on the TV to see the latest news on Channel Seven. The images of the destruction were heartbreaking, and Bella felt a sense of helplessness wash over her. She tried to call Marcus, but there was no answer. She kept checking her phone but yet no response from Marcus. She began to become more anxious and nervous at the fact that something could have happened to Marcus.
“Sarah, he isn’t answering any of my calls or texts. I'm starting to get worried. What if something happened? What if he's hurt? What if...”
“BELLA, BREATHE,” Sarah said, cutting her off. “If you want, I can cover for you, and you can check on him at the lab.”
“Ok... Thank you. I love you. I will update you when I can.”
She set out to find him, braving the flooded streets and dodging debris as she went. She searched for hours, calling out his name, but there was no sign of him. Just as she was about to lose hope, she saw him in the distance, standing in knee-deep water, surrounded by fallen trees and debris. Bella rushed to his side, relief washing over her.
As she approached, she noticed that Marcus was soaked to the bone and shivering. "What happened? Are you okay?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.
Marcus looked up at her, his eyes tired and weary. "I was caught in a sudden flood. I didn't have time to get out of the way," he explained, his voice hoarse.
"My lab was destroyed," he said. "All of my research, everything I've been working on for months...it's all gone."
Bella put a hand on his arm. "I'm so sorry, Marcus."

Bella's heart sank at the thought of what could have happened to him. She knew that Miami was prone to sudden floods, and the thought of losing Marcus to one of them was unbearable.
She helped him to his feet, taking his hand in hers. "Let's get you out of here," she said, pulling him along as they made their way through the knee-deep water.
Bella wrapped Marcus in a blanket and held him close, trying to warm him up. She couldn't help but feel grateful that he was okay, but at the same time, she was terrified that something like this could happen again.
As they made their way back to higher ground, a sudden wave hit them from the side, knocking them off their feet. Bella's leg got stuck, and she felt a sharp pressure on her chest as it got trapped between some rocks, and she could feel the water pulling her deeper in.
"Marcus, help me!" she cried out, desperately trying to grab onto something to stop herself from being pulled in.
Marcus quickly sprang into action, grabbing onto Bella's hand and pulling with all his might. But the force of the whirlpool was too strong, and despite his best efforts, he couldn't free her.
Bella looked up at Marcus with tears in her eyes. "Marcus, it hurts!" she yelled, while her leg began to get more and more crushed by the rocks.
Marcus, franticly looking for a stick, grabbed the nearest one and dug his heels into the ground, pulling with all his strength. But it was no use. “Marcus, I lov...”

“Ugh, what time is it...?”
“Potato, get off me, your heavy...”
“Meow...”
“Ugh, my head is pounding...”
“God, I’m gonna be late to the hospital again. Especially with all this rain, when will it ever end.”
