Hurry up!" "I am coming mama," says Maritza as she stumbles out of the door, to the roof top and in her mother’s flying car. Maritza Garcia is my 27-year-old granddaughter whom I love dearly. Today is her graduation. Maritza, my daughter Jenny, and I have been waiting for this moment since Maritza was 10. I remember when Maritza was a child and she used to tell me about her fantasies of being a lawyer and helping people. "I am so proud of you mi hija I can’t believe you are graduating from the University Of Florida and passed your BAR exam," says Jenny. "Thank you mama I’ve wanted this for a very long time," Maritza says holding her diploma and her big brown eyes filled with tears of joy. "I wish Abuela was here to see it," she says as she begins to pout. "Abuela will forever be with us," says my daughter. She is right. I could never miss a moment so special. In fact, I never miss a moment . I have lived in Florida all my life. Back in 2023, I dreamed of living in Florida forever. That was until the glaciers began to melt because of global warming and the sea level began to rise. Sea level had been consistently rising for years, so that wasn't news . The real problem was the velocity. The sea level started rising extremely quickly and many people lost their lives, homes and public jobs. The year is now 2075 and the Florida I knew no longer exists. "Okay so what’s your next move pumpkin?" asks Jenny on the ride home from graduation while swerving through the clouds. "Are you going to Harvard to teach? Will you stay in Florida or will you travel the world for a year?" Pumpkin was the nickname I gave my granddaughter; she used to fantasize about the idea of going to a pumpkin patch and picking up the biggest pumpkin. Due to Florida’s flooding conditions Pumpkin patches was something Maritza never got to experience. "Mama I have been thinking about it and Florida is in such bad shape," says Maritza, holding her head down. "Florida is 6ft under water. Half of the population isn’t taking their children to school. Millions of homeless people and pets have died because of the sea level rise and Florida’s going through a recession." "Okay, so I guess you’re traveling for a year?" Jenny questions. "Wrong!!! Mom I’m going to run for governor," exclaimed Maritza. Maritza was raised in South Florida. Born on April 23, 2048 on a hot summer day. In 2048 Florida began to hit rock bottom. When Maritza was growing up I told her many stories about what sunny South Florida was like before the flooding and devastating losses. I could tell a part of Maritza yearned to meet the fun and beautiful South Florida I once knew. "Governor? ... mi hija ... of Florida? But you are so young! You are going to struggle and stress entirely too much," Jenny says anxiously. "Mama, the state of Florida needs a leader, someone that will pick this community up, someone who can start new business ventures with other states and bring tourism back to Florida," says Maritza in an assertive tone. "Mama, I need to do this. It feels right. Helping feels right. Abuela would’ve understood." I understood Maritza's wants and her beliefs. That's why we always got along so well. My daughter Jenny on the other hand, well let’s just say they don’t always see eye to eye, but she has always been supportive. "Maritza, are you sure about this?" " Yes, mama, I am." "Well, let’s get you ready for that election," says Jenny, smiling from ear to ear. They both hugged each other and jumped up and down in excitement. To win this Election Maritza must show how and why she's the best candidate. At this moment Florida can be traveled in two ways. Boats or flying cars. There is no public transportation, not even for children who go to school. Now the State of Florida is facing child endangerment lawsuits because they are not providing an education to the children by not providing them with a way to attend school. The prices are inflated. Many parents have lost their jobs and can’t afford to have their own boat or flying car to take their child to school. Home schooling is not enough. In the state of Florida, only a quarter of the children are passing to the next grade this year. This has never been seen in Florida’s educational history. The pollution in the water that surrounds us is so much you cannot drink the water nor make it drinkable it will paralyze you . All of the toxins picked up off the floor and getting mixed around in different cities are really causing death issues. When the sun gets too hot and condensation begins to occur the air can be toxic to many people. Homes are now referred to as high rise homes nevertheless some people live in houseboats . HR homes only exist in Florida . A highrise home is designed for harsh weather and current. It looks like your typical home sitting on top of a soaring cylinder. Between the house and the cylinder is a spider web shaped holder that grips the entire house that connects vertically with the cylinder. From up here they look like mushrooms. People lived comfortably in their high rise homes. They use an elevator to reach their front porch and sleep without worry of the ocean. Maritza is hosting a get together for the people of the community and those who have been affected by the sea level rise and pollution. The people of Miami Dade, Broward and Ft.Lauderdale county have been most affected . This all took place in a highrise auditorium in Broward county. Maritza sees people's faces as they are coming into the establishment and notices they seem to have lost hope. In the south not many could afford high rise homes or even boat homes . Many homeless people died at night because they would fall asleep anywhere and the current would take them. Multiple people get up, go to the microphone in the auditorium and share their stories. As Maritza listens to the reality the residents shared she hears a cry for help. Maritza connects with the citizens because she also knows what it is like to lose someone you love to sea level rise and pollution. "Thank you guys so much for sharing your beautiful and heartfelt stories. If you don’t mind listening to one more, I'll share mine." The crowd cheers for Maritza as she summons the courage to continue. As Maritza holds the microphone with both hands, she puts her head down and begins, "The ocean has no respect for who you are, for the things you value the most. My grandmother, a 65-year-old Puerto Rican was outside on a really hot day. A day so hot the pollution from the ocean turned the air gray. The toxic air filled my Abuela’s lungs and she wasn't able to breathe, she didn’t make it. I’ve always wanted to make a change for this state." "We deserve more!" shouts Maritza. "YEA!" the crowd shouts back. Once the rumbles clear, she resumes, " I am thrilled to announce that I will be running for Governor of Florida. I know I am young, but saving Florida is my only priority and today we can build a better tomorrow." Maritza stares at the crowd as they uproar and start to chant: "MARI-TZA! MARI-TZA! MARI-TZA!" Sadly, I did pass away as Matiza described. But nothing made me happier than to see my granddaughter’s joy. "Mama You should've seen them, they were all going crazy and screaming my name. I even shared Abuela’s story with the crowd and they embraced me," says Maritza as she walks in the door and lays on the sofa next to her mother. "I’m glad everything went well, pumpkin," says Jenny. The following months consists of countless propaganda, clothespins, flyers, meet-and-greets, and a lot of team meetings for Maritza. Maritza’s opponent is a 45-year-old caucasian male named Gregory Colemon. Colemon is originally from Arizona he has nothing to do with Florida. He’s agreed to sign off on a bill that will charge citizens thousands more in taxes to cover the filtration of polluted water. Today is the day of the official debate. Maritza and Gregory go to the podium and address each other professionally. Residents of Florida have the opportunity to step up and ask questions on the microphone to each candidate. A small yet firm older Asian man stepped up to the microphone and asked “Well, I can't take my granddaughter to school. I have no way there. How will the government help me with this?” Maritza responds, "Well, I would petition the US government to fund high-rise schools and provide flying school transportation for all children around the district area of the school." The crowd claps loudly. "I would just wait for the new homeschool update to load, you get new features and a better way of homeschooling," says Gregory with a cheesy smile. "Most parents cannot stay home with their children all day!" exclaims Maritza. To the microphone walks a skinny teenager with crispy hair ,who asks what will be done about the water pollution ? Gregory begins to explain how the tax percentage will increase 20% . The crowd’s demeanor changed; they were booing Colemon’s point. So Maritza began to answer the question. “It is our human right to have clean water, to be able to bathe ourselves comfortably and be healthy like everyone else. Floridians are not the reason why sea level is rising so they shouldn't have to pay for it even though they are already suffering from it.” A thin tall lady of African American descent makes her way to the microphone . She approaches the microphone and with a voice sweet like honey she asks,, how will us old folk get around dear? Seniors are a very symbolic and important part of our community. They represent wisdom, life and they bring out the kindness in one another. I will push for free public transportation, such as flying taxis and buses responded Maritza. Gregory with a snug look on his face lets the public know he plans to develop elderly homes which seniors can pay for with their retirement pension. The debate was getting to an end and it was time to name the best candidate. This is the tough part for Maritza; she's always been such an impatient girl . After a month of stand by, the night was finally here . The votes are in and everything is counted . Maritza and Jenny holding eachothers hands on the sofa , turned on the news to a headline that read THE NEW GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA IS ….. Maritza Garcia !!!! I could not believe my eyes , MAMA ARE YOU SEEING THIS??? Maritza begins to jump up and down similar to a bunny. YESSS I see what you have done mi hija I told you , you were capable , you deserve the world. Inauguration is tomorrow and I cannot wait to see what dress I should wear. I am glad my daughter Jenny has this great opportunity to show her the dress. Mama it fits like a glove , I have to wear it to the inauguration. The most eventful day of my life has arrived, says Maritza as she is landing in Washington D.C. My pumpkin begins to say her oath in my dress and it is the most beautiful sight I’d ever seen. I Maritza Garcia swear to protect , be honest and serve the state of Florida from this day forward with my life . Now the real work begins. Fast forward three years , Maritza has helped improve tourism in Florida by allowing international marketing of high rise hotels and homes as a unique trait known to Florida state.
